Wisdom Tooth Surgery
Wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars are usually located at the back of the mouth. Some people may be born with 0 wisdom teeth, and other can have 1-4 wisdom teeth as well. They usually erupt between the ages of 17-25, and in some patients, may not erupt at all and remain buried within the gums and bone of the jaw.
If your wisdom teeth are fully erupted and upright, they are accessible to cleaning and brushing, you will not need to remove them.
In many patients, there is usually not enough space in the jaw for the wisdom teeth to erupt fully and upright. They erupt partially in a slanted manner and are called impacted wisdom teeth. In these cases, removal is often encouraged as impacted wisdom teeth tend to trap food and is difficult to access for cleaning, causing problems like decay and gum disease. Sometimes, decay can happen on the adjacent molar and if left undetected and untreated, may require the removal of both the wisdom tooth and adjacent molar. Patients may experience pain around the wisdom tooth region especially if the gums are inflamed, which may lead to an infection if left untreated. Sometimes, there may not be pain but this does not mean that there are no issues, as decay can be painless when it first starts, and when you experience pain it may mean the decay has progressed too deep towards the nerve of the teeth. Your dentist may encourage you to remove your wisdom teeth earlier as the risks and complications of a wisdom tooth surgery will be lower as compared to removing them later in your life.
Unerupted wisdom teeth, or buried wisdom teeth cannot be seen in the jaw, but will be detected during your routine dental x-rays. You may not need to remove buried wisdom teeth, but will have to go for regular x-rays to monitor for cyst formations. Prior to removal of your wisdom teeth, your dentist will administer local anaesthesia to ensure numbness to the tooth and surrounding tissues. You may still feel pressure and vibrations during the procedure, but you should not be experiencing pain.
